Description

The General Surgery Residency Training Program at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut has a PGY2 PRELIMINARY position available beginning July 1st, 2025. Please see the specific requirements and instructions for applying below. 

  •         The trainee is both a learner and a member of the healthcare team. Responsibilities (essential job functions) of a trainee include:
  •         Satisfactory progress in training program as measured by program goals and objectives and milestones as applicable
  •         Meeting Technical Performance Standards
  •         Participation in safe, effective and compassionate healthcare
  •         Development of an understanding of the ethical, socioeconomic and medical/legal issues that affect healthcare and of how to apply cost containment measures in the provision of healthcare
  •         Participation in institutional orientation, the educational activities of the training program, and other required education programs, within the institution or at a participating site
  •         Assumption of responsibility for teaching and supervising other trainees and students and participation in other activities involving the clinical staff, as appropriate
  •         Participation in institutional committees and councils to which the trainee is appointed or invited
  •         Maintenance of certification (ACLs, PALS, ATLS, etc.) as required by enrolled training program
  •         Maintenance of the appropriate licensure, where necessary, while appointed to a training program
  •         Documentation of cases and procedures, where appropriate, as directed by the enrolled training program and mandated accreditation body
  •         Performance of duties in accordance with the established practices, procedures, and policies of training programs, Trinity Health, clinical departments, and other participating sites to which the trainee is assigned
  •         Recognition of personal conditions or situations which may affect patient safety or progress in training, and communication of this to program leadership
  •         Participate in institutional, departmental, and program activities involving performance improvement and patient care review.
  •         Recognize the need for protection of human subjects when conducting research through compliance with IRB policies, procedures, and education.
  •         Comply with Professional Expectations for Graduate Medical Trainees.
  •         Participate in the evaluation of faculty, didactics, program, and program director as stipulated by the program requirements.
  •         Respect patient’s rights.
  •         Participate in duty hour monitoring accurately.


Requirements

PREREQUISITES (no exceptions):

  • Successful completion, in good standing, of or currently enrolled in a PGY1 Preliminary year for the 2024-25 academic year of US clinical training in an ACGME accredited general surgery residency training program.
  • Must have graduated from an Accredited U.S. Medical School or International Medical Graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)

7.    Three (3) current Letters of Recommendation. Including one from the current Program Director will be required.

8.    Current year semi-annual Evaluation and Mid-Year Milestone Evaluation

9.    Current ACGME “General Surgery Defined Category and Minimum” and “General Surgery Year 2 Minimum” case log reports

10. ACLS, BLS and ATLS certification

11. FLS and FES Certifications (if available)

12. Copy of ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
